Gmail uses various pre-set filters to determine whether the emails you receive in your primary inbox are genuine or spam. While this system usually works, a problem occurs when potentially important emails land directly in your spam folder. Fortunately, you can use a few different methods to prevent emails from going to spam.

How to Prevent Emails From Going to Spam in Gmail on a PC

If the person sends the same email to many recipients, all the emails will probably go straight to spam. If an email doesn’t pass the spam test, it will automatically be sent to the designated spam folder on your Gmail account. You won’t even receive a notification when this happens. If you received an important email that went to spam 30 days ago, it will automatically get deleted. - Type in “from:” and the “email address” you don’t want to go to spam in the search bar at the top of the screen. You can also add the “user’s domain name.”
- Click on the “filter” icon on the right side of the search bar.

- Check the “Never send it to Spam” box.
- Do the same for the “Also apply filter to matching ## conversations” box.
- Click on the “Create Filter” button again.
That’s about it. If you check the first box, any emails sent from the address you typed won’t go to spam any longer. However, you should also check the second box to remove any previous emails from this person from the spam folder.
As mentioned before, you will have to repeat this process for each email address you don’t want to go to spam. The filter feature is quite convenient because it lets you manage your inbox in various ways. For example, you can use it to automatically archive emails, delete them, forward them to another address, or add them to a category.
How to Create a Spam Filter via Gmail Settings
There is another way to create a spam filter, and it’s via the Gmail settings. This is what you need to do:
- Open “Gmail.”
- Go to the “Settings” icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Click on the “See all settings” button on the drop-down menu.
- Choose the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” tab at the top of the screen.
- Navigate to “Create a new filter.”
- Enter the email addresses to which the filter will be applied. You can also add specific words the emails may contain and other details.
- Go to “Create a filter.”
- Click the “Never send to spam” and “Also apply filter to matching conversations” boxes.
- Select the “Create a filter” button again.
The second way to prevent emails from going to spam in Gmail requires you to remove previous emails from the spam folder using the manual method. Here’s how it’s done:
- Go to “Gmail“ and sign in to the desired account.
- Click on the “More” option on the left sidebar.
- Proceed to the “Spam” folder.
- Locate the email you want to remove from the spam folder.
- Check the box next to the “email address.”
- Select the “Not spam” option above the emails.
Additionally, you can click on that email and select the “Report not spam” option. Once you do this, any future mail from this email address won’t go to spam again.
How to Add a Contact to Gmail to Prevent Their Emails Going to Spam
Gmail advises adding users to your contacts list to prevent their emails from going to spam because they never send emails from your contacts to spam. Creating a new Gmail contact is simple and only takes a few seconds. Here’s how it’s done:
- Go to “Google Contacts.”
- Sign in to the desired Google account if you haven’t already.
- Click on the “plus” button in the bottom-right corner.
- Choose “Create a contact.”
- Enter the contact information, like the user’s first name, last name, email, and more.
- Click on the “Save” button in the top-right corner of the screen.
Aside from working with one contact, you can add more at once by choosing “Create multiple contacts.” Another way to add someone to your Google Contacts is directly from the email. When you open an email you receive from them, click on their “email address.” The contact icon will appear on the pop-up window, where you can fill out basic information about that person and save it to your contacts.
All these methods are fool-proof and will save you time from having to check your spam folder. Not to mention that you won’t risk missing an important email ever again. Of course, you should still check your Spam folder regularly to avoid missing anything important.
How to Prevent Emails from Going to Spam in Gmail on Android/iOS/iPhone
The Gmail app doesn’t offer as many solutions for preventing emails from going to spam as the browser-based version. For instance, you can’t create custom filters on the mobile app. That’s why it’s better to follow the steps from the previous sections on your computer whenever possible.
That said, there are some steps you can take to minimize the chances of emails going to spam. First, you should designate an email as non-spam so emails from the same address won’t go to spam in the future. Follow the steps below to do so:
- Open the “Gmail” app on your phone.
- Tap on the “three horizontal lines” in the top-left corner.
- Go to the “Spam” folder.
- Find the email that shouldn’t be labeled as spam.
- Tap on the “Report not spam” option.
That’s all there is to it. The next time you receive a mail from this email address, it won’t go to spam anymore. On some phones, you might have to tap on the email and then go to the three dots in the upper-right corner. The “Report not spam” option will be there.
While you can’t create contact filters on the Gmail mobile app, you can mark emails as necessary. Hold and press the email until the field becomes blue to do this. Tap the “three dots” in the upper-right corner and choose “Mark as important.” Even though you only marked one email, Gmail will recognize the address the next time they send you something and set all future ones as necessary.
Never Have Important Emails Go to Spam Again
Gmail’s spam filters are helpful, but they can sometimes be wrong and send important emails to spam. There are a few ways to prevent this, but creating a filter for specific email addresses is the most efficient. The second method is to add those email addresses to your contacts, and Gmail will never send those emails to spam again.
