How to Get to Gutanbac Shrine in Tears of the Kingdom

You can find shrines all over “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” Some are out in the open, while others are deep in snowy regions and tucked away behind icy walls. The Snow Shrine, also called the Gutanbac Shrine, is an example of a hidden shrine. It’s the third one that appears within the game, and you’ll need to activate it for a significant ability upgrade.

How to Get to Gutanbac Shrine in Tears of the Kingdom

This article will show you how to get to the snow shrine in “Tears of the Kingdom.”

Reaching the Snow Shrine in Tears of the Kingdom

The Snow Shrine is supposed to be the third Shrine you clear within Hyrule. However, this might not be the case for you. “Tears of the Kingdom” is an open-world game, so your explorations might divert you from clearing it. The good news is you can always go back to certain regions despite missing their opportunities.

However, we will assume you’re completing it as the third, right after the In-Isa shrine, for navigation purposes. Here’s how to reach the Snow Shrine from In-Isa:

  1. Head South East from the Great Sky Island towards the coordinates: 0709, -1381, 1584.
  2. Navigate through the mine carts until you reach snowy cliffs with a stone structure entrance.
  3. Go through the cave to the right side of the stone structure entrance.
  4. Trek through the snow cliffs straight ahead until you reach the ice wall.
  5. Enter the cave appearing in the ice wall and take the stairs towards the exit.
  6. Continue following the ice wall left until you reach a waterfall.
  7. Go behind the waterfall and climb the cliff until you reach the top.
  8. Move forward until you get to the Snow Shrine.

The journey might seem long, but it’s well worth it once you get to the Snow Shrine. Beware of enemies along the way, as the icy cliffs aren’t as barren as they may seem. Once you reach the Shrine, pass through it to interact with it. However, your Snow Shrine adventure doesn’t end there. It’ll give you the ability to Ascend and the Energy Cell. You’ll have to use both.

It’s also best to start your Snow Shrine journey with lots of cooked food. This will make it easier to navigate the cold terrain.

Using Your New Ascend Ability

Once you get the Ascend Ability, you’ll need to know how to use it to navigate and transverse seemingly impossible obstacles effectively. This new ability allows you to propel upwards and go through solid matter. It’s advantageous if you need to climb mountains or reach tower tops but don’t want to lose time or stamina.

Here’s how to use Ascend once you pass the Snow Shrine:

  1. Press the “L” bumper and hold it down.
  2. When the ability wheel appears, select the “Ascend” option on your right stick.
  3. You’ll have an upwards view of the terrain, and Link will glow with a green light grid.
  4. Move around the light grid until you find an obstacle you want to pass.
  5. Select “A” to ascend. This will bring you through the obstacle.
  6. Press “A” again to confirm your new position or “B” to cancel it and move back down.

You might notice that the light grid sometimes glows red instead of green. That means you cannot ascend through the current position of you and your obstacle. You’ll need to move around until you find an acceptable position and the light turns green.

Solving the Snow Shrine’s Challenge

There are 152 shrines in “Tears of the Kingdom,” which may require you to solve a certain puzzle to pass them entirely. Now that you know how to use the Ascend ability properly, you can move on to solving the Snow Shrine’s challenge. This will allow you to practice your new Ascend Ability until you get the hang of it.

Here’s how you can pass through the Snow Shrine challenge while using the Ascend Ability:

  1. From the Shrine, walk forward and go through the descending stairs.
  2. You’ll eventually run into two pillars. Stand below the shorter one.
  3. Use Ascend to get on top of the pillar and open the Treasure Chest on it.
  4. Go back below the pillars and stand below the taller one, then use Ascend again.
  5. Defeat the construct that you encounter. Watch out for arrows.
  6. Go to the crates to your right when you ascended, destroy them, and stand in their place.
  7. Ascend to the platform and open the treasure chest. You’ll receive a new bow.
  8. Go a level down, and you’ll see a folded bridge, cut down the ropes so that it opens, and then go below it.
  9. Use Ascend to rise to the bridge and cross it.
  10. You’ll reach two platforms above you; use Ascend to get to one and then the other.
  11. Keep moving forward until you go to the sigil. Interact with it to complete the challenge.

There you have it! That’s all you need to do to complete the Snow Shrine. If you passed the first two shrines within the game, you’d now have the Fuse and Ascend ability to go with it. It also doesn’t matter which Shrine you complete first, the In-Isa shrine or the snow shrine, although the snow shrine was designed to be chronologically the third.

The construct enemies you’ll encounter while completing the Snow Shrine have projectiles such as a bow and arrows. Make sure to wisely use your shield and be on the defense when ascending through platforms, as it’s easy to be ambushed from this angle too.

The Great Snow Shrine Journey

Shrines are usually easy to pass. It’s finding them that can be difficult. The third Shrine in “Tears of the Kingdom” is located in the snowy biome, with a few twists and turns to reach it. Most players will be traveling from the In-Isa Shrine, which involves moving southeast along a large stretch of land. You’ll know you’re going the right way if you start seeing mine carts and snow ledges. You’ll eventually reach the Shrine by passing through a few caves and climbing a waterfall. Once passed, you’ll finally be able to use the Ascend ability.
