If you want to save maps offline on your Android device, you’ll be pleased to learn it’s a relatively straightforward process. Note that it must be done while you are connected to the internet, or else the map won’t download until the next time you’re connected.
Follow these instructions to save a Google map offline:
- Open the Google Maps app on your Android device.
- Find your profile picture at the top right and tap it.
- Tap “Offline maps.”
- Tap “Selecta your own map.”
- Select the highlighted area of the offline map you want to create. You can use the same movement and zooming motions that you use to navigate normally in Google Maps.
- Tap “Download” when you have selected the correct area for your map. It will now be available under “Offline maps” the next time you need it.
Remember that your offline map won’t be able to give updated traffic, or other aspects that require an internet connection. But you will be able to use it almost like a paper map from the past.
How to Save Google Maps Offline on iPhone
The process is similar on an iPhone. Follow these steps while connected to the internet to download offline maps. Otherwise, the map you save will only be available the next time you’re connected online.
- Open the app on your Apple device.
- Tap your profile picture located at the top right of the screen.
- Tap “Offline maps.”
- Tap “Create a new offline map.”
- Move and zoom the map over the section of the map you want to save offline.
- Tap “Download” when you have selected the correct area for your map. It will now be available under “Offline maps” the next time you need it, or the next time you connect to Wi-Fi if you aren’t currently connected.
Remember that your offline map won’t be able to give updated information on traffic or other aspects that require internet connection. But it will be available to view even when you’re not online.

When you’re ready to access your saved map, follow these steps:
- Open Google Maps on your Android device.
- Find your profile picture at the top right and tap it.
- Tap “Offline maps.”
- Your previously saved offline maps are listed to choose from.

Whether you’re online or not, you can access your saved offline maps on your iPhone.
