Do you want to enjoy content from your favorite apps on a bigger screen? Forget about complicated cabled setups and lagging screen mirroring. A handy gadget called Chromecast offers a better solution.
If you got your hands on one of these powerful digital media players, you might be wondering how to enable it on your TV. Here’s how to set up Chromecast on a Samsung smart TV and start streaming right away.
Does My Samsung TV Support Chromecast?
Many popular smart TVs from brands like Sony, Toshiba, Philips, etc., come with Chromecast already built-in. Samsung TV users will need to take an extra step and purchase a dongle to get Chromecast functionalities on their devices. The good news is that Chromecast is available for almost any TV, even older, non-smart models. As long as your Samsung TV has an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port, you’ll be able to connect this streaming gadget and get more out of your TV.
If you have an older Samsung TV, Chromecast can add a myriad of functionalities to your device. You can use it to stream any kind of content through mobile or web apps, or mirror your Google Chrome screen to your TV. Chromecast might still be worth it for the seamless experience it offers, even if your smart TV already has some sort of integrated screen mirroring solution. In 2022, over 1,000 apps have Chromecast support, making sending media to your TV screen a breeze.
How to Set Up Chromecast on a Samsung Smart TV
Setting up Chromecast on your TV will only take a few minutes. Here’s everything you’ll need in the process.
- A Samsung Smart TV with an HDMI port
- A Chromecast device and its components
- Another smart device, like an Android phone or an iPhone
- A Wi-Fi connection
In 2022, you can find two Chromecast models on the market: the third generation of Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV. The setup process is almost identical for both models, with one difference. You’ll also need to pair your new remote in the case of Chromecast with Google TV.
Step One: Set Up Your Device
So, you took your Chromecast out of its box. For Chromecast 3, you should have the device, a USB cable, and an adapter in your hands. If you purchased Chromecast with Google TV, you’ll also find a remote control and two batteries in the packaging.
Connect your Chromecast 3 or Chromecast with Google TV to your Samsung TV in the following way.
- Locate your TV’s HDMI port by checking the back of the device. You’ll typically find it on the right side (when viewed from the front).
- Supply your Chromecast with electricity using the USB cable. Plug one end of the USB cable into the device and the other into the adapter that came with it, then connect the adapter to a power source.
- Plug your Chromecast’s HDMI cable into your TV.
- Turn on your TV and change the input source to the correct HDMI channel.
Most Samsung smart TVs come with at least two HDMI ports: a standard HDMI and an HDMI ARC. Any available HDMI port will work with Chromecast.
Note: If you have Chromecast 3 or an earlier generation of the basic model, you can skip the power adapter. Simply plug the USB into a USB port on your TV to supply your device with power. Chromecast with Google TV and the discontinued Chromecast Ultra are more demanding models, so plugging them into your TV’s USB port won’t work.
Step Two: Pair Your Remote
If you purchased Chromecast with Google TV, you’ll be prompted to pair your remote as soon as your Chromecast is connected. Follow the instructions on your TV screen.
- Insert the batteries into your remote.
- Press and hold your remote’s arrow and home buttons simultaneously.
- Your remote will start blinking if the pairing is successful.
Step Three: Connect With Chromecast
The next step is setting up Chromecast using Google Home. Don’t worry; you won’t have to use this app every time you use Chromecast. However, it’s necessary for configuring Chromecast 3, and significantly facilitates the process of setting up Chromecast with Google TV too. You’ll need two things for this step.
- A smart device, like a phone or tablet (both iOS and Android are suitable)
- A Google account
When you’re ready, follow these steps to pair your devices.
- Download and launch the Google Home app for iOS or Android on your phone or tablet.
- Press the “+” symbol and select “Set up device” from the menu.
- Create a home by tapping the “+” sign if you’re new to Google Home. If you already have a home added, choose it from the list.
- The app will now search for nearby devices.
- Select your Chromecast from the list. You can check the name of your Chromecast in the corner of your TV screen to ensure you’re choosing the right device.
- Hit “Next.”
- Finish up the pairing process in one of the following ways.
- On Chromecast 3, you’ll see a code appear on your TV and phone or tablet screen. If they correspond to each other, tap “Yes.”
- On Chromecast with Google TV, you’ll be prompted to scan the QR code on your TV’s screen.
- On Chromecast 3, you’ll see a code appear on your TV and phone or tablet screen. If they correspond to each other, tap “Yes.”
- Choose and name the room where your Chromecast is set up and press “Next.”
- Connect your Chromecast to the appropriate Wi-Fi network.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to personalize your Chromecast and Remote settings, and you’re done.
You can also set up Chromecast with Google TV without the Google Home app. Just select “Set up on TV instead” on the initial screen and follow the instructions. This method might be a bit more tedious, but the remote will help you out.
Note: Your Chromecast and the device you’re casting from will need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure you pick the network you usually use with your device during the Chromecast setup process.
Step Four: Stream Away
All you have left to do is link your media apps to your Chromecast, and you’re ready to start casting. Let’s see how to use Chromecast to stream content on a Samsung smart TV.
- Open the Google Home app and select your home.
- Tap the “Media” button to add a service to your Chromecast.
- Pick a category and link the app from which you want to cast.
- Open the app you just added to your Chromecast.
- Find the Chromecast button. It looks like a rectangle with three bars in the lower-left corner.
- Hit the button and select your TV from the popup to send the content directly to your screen.
Bring Any Content to Your TV Screen With Chromecast
Setting up Chromecast is a straightforward process that won’t take much time if you follow the instructions outlined above. Once it’s set up, you won’t have to squint at your tiny phone screen anymore; you’ll be able to watch your shows or any other media content on your TV’s large screen.
