How To Fix an Eero Not Connecting to the Internet

Eero is an Amazon-provided Wi-Fi system that uses a mesh modem system to provide a better Wi-Fi network over a larger area. It was designed to replace routers as we know them today. Also, with the eero 6 being available at an affordable price, eero is making people’s dreams of having a stable, secure Wi-Fi system a reality regardless of their Internet Service Provider (ISP).

How To Fix an Eero Not Connecting to the Internet

Sometimes, an eero device won’t connect to the internet, but there are a couple of quick fixes that can help solve the problem fast.

Restart Your Eero and Modem

When dealing with a computer problem, the old adage of plugging it out and back in usually works. Unplug the power cable from the main device, wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

This act is technically called “power cycling.” If something requires you to power cycle a device, it can also be done by turning the device on and off through its power button (if it exists). Keep in mind that pressing the “Reset” button on a modem or router resets its network settings and is a slightly more advanced troubleshooting method.

While power cycling doesn’t hard-reset the device, it forces it to repeat the connection acquiring process. This can solve simple and short-term connectivity issues.

You can repeat this process both for your ISP modem and for the gateway (main) eero to see if it fixes the issue.

Check Your Internet Connection

Eero is primarily a Wi-Fi router that spreads an existing network, and not much can be done for providing you with internet if your ISP is the one experiencing issues.

The easiest way to detect whether eero is receiving an internet connection is to connect a PC directly to the router via cable. This allows you to go into its advanced settings and check whether it’s receiving a network signal.

Alternatively, you can use the provided eero app for limited troubleshooting. Refer to the instruction manual for your eero device for more network information.

For regular eero 6, the main device is the one with two Ethernet ports, one of which goes to the ISP’s modem to supply an internet connection. This leaves the other open to a PC connection.

If an overview of the connection settings on the eero directly doesn’t yield results, connect to the ISP modem instead. If you have web access, something is wrong with the connection between the modem and eero or the eero modem. Otherwise, you’ll need to consult your ISP to fix a general connection issue.

Bridge Mode Turned Off

The eero system doesn’t function without a modem provided by an ISP to route network traffic. For some ISPs, that modem doubles as a router. Unfortunately, two connected routers (as opposed to modem-router and router-switch connections) need to be NAT-bridged or have a complex configuration to function without errors. If your ISP’s device is to be used only as a modem, its bridge mode needs to be turned on.

To locate bridging mode on your ISP router/modem, please refer to the device’s instruction manual for accurate information.

Subsequently, putting an eero in bridge mode turns off its network services while still allowing it to provide Wi-Fi access.

It is not advisable to turn the bridge mode on because in that case, you’ll end up losing access to family profiles, device blocking, eero Labs, eero Secure, advanced network settings, etc. Still, if for some reason you need to turn the bridge mode on, nothing will be taken away from the speed and stability.

How to Turn On Bridge Mode on Eero

People with certain types of network configurations need to manage their network through the existing router. That is why the bridge mode exists on eero. However, it is not advised to have this mode on since it takes away from some of the more advanced eero features.

Still, if you belong to the group of people who need to have the bridge mode on, here is how to do it:

  1. Open the eero app and tap “Settings” in the bottom right corner.
  2. Tap “Advanced.”
  3. Tap “DHCP and NAT.”
  4. Switch from “Automatic” to “Bridge.”
  5. Tap the “Save” button in the top right corner.

Re-Installing the Eero Mobile App

Some users have shared that deleting your eero mobile app, then re-installing it, can help with the issue of eero not connecting to the internet. Sometimes re-installing the app helps with making sure the app is up-to-date and fully functional.

If you’re having trouble downloading or finding the eero app on your phone, go to the Apple App Storeor Google Play, and type in “eero app” in the search bar. Then, you can either download it or deinstall it.

Delete and Re-Add Eero

The most common eero setups include having more than one eero since that greatly improves the coverage of the home, which consequently improves internet speed in some areas. If only one of the eeros is having issues with connecting to the internet, the best option is to remove it from the app then add it back in.

You can simply delete an eero device by following these steps:

  1. Open the eero app on your device.
  2. Tap the eero you want to delete.
  3. Tap “Advanced.”
  4. Tap the “Remove” button with the name of the Eero you wish to delete.
  5. Tap “Remove from Network” at the bottom of the screen.

Once you want to re-add the eero, you can just use these steps:

  1. Open the eero app on your device.
  2. Tap the blue “+” icon on the top right.
  3. Tap “Add or Replace eero Devices.”
  4. Tap “Add eero Device”
  5. Follow further set-up instructions until the process is complete.

Eero-ly Simple

Eero is a great way to bring more control over Wi-Fi and provide streamlined network access over larger distances, but it’s not perfect. Thankfully, most connectivity issues can be fixed in no time.
