How to Change the Location on Snap Map

Snapchat is probably best known for the innovative content sharing feature that disappears as soon your group has viewed it. Now the developers have introduced Snap Map, a feature that allows you to share your location with a chosen audience.

How to Change the Location on Snap Map

But how do you change your location in the app? This article will explain how to change your location on Snap Map.

How to Change Location Settings on Snap Map

Although sharing your location with your group of friends on Snap Map is fun, there are times you’d prefer to stay incognito.

Here’s how to change your location preferences on Snapchat:

  1. Go to “Settings” on Snapchat.
  2. Scroll to “Who Can…See My Location.”
  3. Select the setting that suits you (only me, close friends, friends, etc.)

Here’s another way of changing your location preferences:

  1. Open Snap Map.
  2. Go to the “Settings” icon in the top right.
  3. Select the setting that you wish.

Always bear in mind who you’re sharing personal information with, such as your current location.

Who Can You Choose to Share Your Location with on Snap Map?

Many users want to draw a line between what is public and what is personal. Even in your private life, you have this filter. So why share everything online publicly?

In Snap Map, there are four categories when it comes to privacy:

  • Ghost Mode – nobody will be able to see your location apart from you.
  • My Friends – anyone in your friends list. This can be a tricky category, as it will involve someone who becomes your friend just seconds after sharing your location.
  • My Friends, Except – you can exclude certain people here.
  • Only These Friends – this option lets you choose a specific group.

Choose wisely and don’t post anything you might feel uncomfortable about in the future.

Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing Location Preferences in Snap Map

Even though you might see Snap Map as another fun way to stay informed about your friends, it’s not all so innocent.

Here are some things you should consider while using this option on Snapchat:

  • Review who is on your “Friends” list

When choosing to share something with your friends, think about who you already have on Snapchat or might add after posting. It’s not a great idea to have people you don’t know in real life follow your every move. This would easily let them know where you live, work, go to school, and make a clear picture of your schedule.

  • Sharing a story using the “Our Story” feature

This will make it available for absolutely anyone to see your story on the map. Again, not a super smart idea to share something private just like that with anyone online.

  • Check what your children are posting

Children can become easy prey, as they’re unaware of the kinds of people who might track and follow them.

We don’t say that you should quit completely using Snap Map. If it brings you fun, go for it. Just be careful about what you share and who you share it with.

Choosing the “My Story” Option

In case you do decide to share your post with the whole world (we don’t judge), these are the steps:

  1. First, take a snap.
  2. Click “Next.”
  3. Choose “My Story”.

Just make sure that this location has its own “Story Collection.”

Advantages of Using Snap Map

We might have broken your spirit with all the talk about dangers to beware of online. Of course, technology is an inevitable part of our life and we should embrace it cautiously.

Here are a few good things that Snap Map can help you with:

  • Meeting up with your friends

Imagine getting lost at a concert or not being able to find the location of the party. You can easily tap on your friends in Snap Map and find your way.

  • Discovering new locations in your city

Be it locations shared by your friends or publicly by unknown users, this can be a fun way to come across new spots.

  • Discovering places in a city you’re about to visit

If you’re planning a trip to a new place from your bucket list, what better way to prepare than to see what people are already posting from there?

  • Keeping a list of your favorite places

If you feel uninspired and clueless about where to go to, “My Places” will remind you of all the cool places you’ve checked out before and might want to visit again.

  • Meeting new people around you

You might notice someone appealing on the map close to you. Who knows, they might be your new best friend or even love interest?

  • “Accidentally” bumping into someone

If someone asks, you didn’t hear this one from us, but we want to help you. Imagine you have a huge crush on someone, but still haven’t had the courage to talk to them yet. Well, tonight might be your chance to. Go to that bar and buy them a drink.

The list could probably go on. These are just a few situations where Snap Map could be your friend rather than your enemy.

How to Report if You Encounter Something Suspicious on Snap Map

These things can happen online, regardless of the service you’re using. In case you notice anything that seems out of the ordinary, follow these steps:

  1. Find the Snap you find inappropriate.
  2. Press and hold it.
  3. In the bottom left corner, a “Report/ Flag” will appear.

It’s important to keep your community clean. Keep in mind that children use the app as well.

If you have children of your own, talk to them and make sure they know what they’re sharing. Stress the importance of telling you in case they notice something they shouldn’t.

Spotted on the Map… or Rather Not?

The Snap Map allows you to share your location with a chosen audience. Of course, you can choose who you wish to share it with, as we’re all well aware of the dangers of the Internet. However, we don’t wish to discourage you from using this fun feature. It’s a great way to discover new places, meet up with friends, or even meet new people. The choice is yours.
